Start with a Risk Assessment to ensure a safe work area:
- Remove loose fitting clothing, jewellery, and tie back long hair
- Give the work your undivided attention
- Make sure the area is clear of people
- Heat proof gauntlets must be worn – these are provided
- To use the pewter casting equipment, speak to a member of workshop staff, or the student helpers
- Familiarize yourself with warning labels on hot areas, and with switching the machine on and off
Operational Safety Rules:
- Ensure the Flamefast casting system is on a stable footing and is pushed back from the edge of the work bench
- Select the High setting using the switch on the side and turn on. The machine will take 10-15 mins to heat up, prepare your moulds in this time
- Do not leave machine unattended whilst switched on
- Place mould or receptacle under the nozzle – once in place do not move until cooled
- Once the Pewter has reached the correct temperate, press the down the side lever to release the molten metal. Do not press when Pewter is solid – this will damage the machine. Tip; Using tweezers place a small piece of paper on top of the Pewter, when this burns brown the metal is ready to pour
- Leave moulds to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the machine and separating
- Turn off machine after each use
