Start with a Risk Assessment to ensure a safe work area:

  1. Remove loose fitting clothing, jewellery, and tie back long hair
  2. Give the work your undivided attention
  3. Make sure the area is clear of people
  4. Heat proof gauntlets must be worn – these are provided
  5. To use the pewter casting equipment, speak to a member of workshop staff, or the student helpers
  6. Familiarize yourself with warning labels on hot areas, and with switching the machine on and off

Operational Safety Rules:

  1. Ensure the Flamefast casting system is on a stable footing and is pushed back from the edge of the work bench
  2. Select the High setting using the switch on the side and turn on. The machine will take 10-15 mins to heat up, prepare your moulds in this time
  3. Do not leave machine unattended whilst switched on
  4. Place mould or receptacle under the nozzle – once in place do not move until cooled
  5. Once the Pewter has reached the correct temperate, press the down the side lever to release the molten metal. Do not press when Pewter is solid – this will damage the machine. Tip; Using tweezers place a small piece of paper on top of the Pewter, when this burns brown the metal is ready to pour
  6. Leave moulds to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the machine and separating
  7. Turn off machine after each use
