Bauer Project. Practice-as-research project exploring gender and sexuality in early Russian film through sound and music.

Curated by Dr Maria Korolkova (School of Design, University of Greenwich) and Dr Margarita Vaysman (Department of Russian, University of St Andrews) with a specially commissioned score by Dr Andrew Knight-Hill (School of Design, University of Greenwich). The project culminated with the screening of Child of the Big City (1913) by Evgenii Bauer at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews, on the 26th April 2019 live with the New Music Ensemble. The new score provides an additional level of understanding and re-appropriation of the film’s content, specifically focusing on the way music and sound can articulate gender roles on screen.
