Education for Sustainability is gaining increasing importance in the higher education sector although historically there has been a greater focus on the sustainability of University campuses rather than the skills and attributes of its graduates. Effective sustainability education requires us to rethink our pedagogical approaches. Problem-based learning (PBL) offers one approach to help students engage with the ‘wicked’ problems that sustainability poses. The talk draws on the successes and failures of a case study from Keele University which aims to integrate sustainability in the curriculum and campus, helping to engage students with sustainability initiatives on the university campus, while providing a transformative learning experience, leading to positive sustainability change in students’ outlook and behaviours.

Zoe Robinson is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science and Sustainability and Director of Education for Sustainability at Keele University. Zoe was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2012 for her work contributing to the field of Education for Sustainability.
