Nicola’s talk included a discussion on artistic process: ‘cross modal
machine learning in creative practice’, VR demos and a Q&A.







Biography
Nicola Plant is an artist, creative technologist and researcher with
an academic and artistic practice interested in empathy, embodiment
and movement-based interactive art technology and performance. Nicola
creates interactive and immersive artworks, installations and
performances, specialising in real-time graphics and movement-based
interactivity using motion-capture, sensors and depth cameras. To
date, her practice has primarily developed interactive virtual reality
artworks that explore expressive movement and empathy. Her practice
more broadly addresses the question of how technology can augment or
deconstruct the experience of embodiment. Her work has been exhibited
at venues such as the Barbican Centre, the V&A Museum and
internationally.
She has a PhD in Media and Arts Technology from Queen Mary University
of London and her research has involved embodied communication,
developing machine learning for movement design in virtual reality,
and immersive technologies for dance practice. She also lectures in
creative computing and machine learning, immersive technologies and
interaction design/HCI.
