University of Greenwich BAME Attainment Gap Project – Phase 2

At the University of Greenwich we are proud to have a diverse community, where students and staff are supported to achieve their full potential. We are working to address the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) attainment gap, which has been consistently identified as an issue across the sector over a number of years.

The BAME attainment gap project is connected to several of our University strategies including: Equality and Diversity, Student Experience, Learning and Teaching

The second phase of the project shall continue to encourage the use of the VA dashboard across programmes and modules. Colleagues who are involved in teaching and learning support should make full use of the resources which have been developed from phase 1 findings and recommendations. (These can be found on the resources page of the BAME attainment gap website). The reports written by our departmental inclusivity Champions from phase 1 of the project has now been cohered into a downloadable document outlining practical recommendations to help address the attainment gap. As the BAME attainment gap project is university wide, we continue emphasising the importance of having a connected leadership over the implementation of these recommendations.

The project team are continuing to work closely with departmental inclusivity Champions and Greenwich Students Union to ensure good practice is implemented and shared. Recently, Dr Maria Korolkova and Dr Hannah Lammin have a talk on the ‘BAME attainment gap and teaching media at Greenwich’. This generated lots of thoughtful discussion around ways of supporting students.

Don’t miss:  We will soon be joined by Emilie Fairnington and Ryan Carty from De Montfort University who will give a talk on inclusion in sport. Although the talk is focused on sport, it is beneficial to all staff and students who are committed to enhancing inclusivity at our university as the issues and approaches discussed may be transferred across disciplines and contexts. It would be great to have a good turn out for this BAME Attainment Gap project event, and it would be helpful if you could book your place by 15 November to allow GLT to make catering arrangements.
