Jonathan Garnett: Work Based Learning at Middlesex University

This video can be seen alongside others from the LTA Open Lecture series and annual conferences on the EDU Vimeo channel.

Jonathan Garnett is the Director of the Institute for Work Based Learning (IWBL) at Middlesex University. Jonathan has twenty years’ experience at the leading edge of the development and operation of work based learning partnerships at higher education level and has worked with public, private and third sector organisations in the UK and internationally. His current research interests include the development of higher education practice and structures to support employer responsive provision. University work-based learning (WBL) programmes are often represented by academia as an appropriate response to the needs of the “knowledge driven economy” (eg Boud and Solomon 2001). The presentation draws upon 20 years of operational practice at Middlesex University to consider the opportunities and challenges WBL offers to higher education institutions and considers particularly the contribution of WBL to the structural capital of the university.
