An HEIF funded survey to locate Henry VIII’s Tilt Yard or jousting ground (1514-18) now beneath the lawns of Queen’s House.
The survey has been carried out in partnership with Royal Museums Greenwich and Historic England using Ground Penetrating Radar, magnetic surveying and 3D LIDAR scanning to map the near-surface remains of Henry VIII’s Tilt Yard, Banqueting House and Disguising House (theatre). These were a part of the Palace of Placentia (from 1447) which now lies underneath Queen’s House and the Old Royal Naval College. The Tudor remains are overlaid with later structures which the survey may also locate such as the Explosives House, Admiral Davis’s stable, various conduits and the Royal Hospital School observatory. An archaeological palimpsest.
