Residencies

Our Artistic Residency programme provides dedicated time for creative practice development in our world class lab facilities SHIFT (Shared Hub for Immersive Future Technologies). Whether you’re exploring new creative territory, developing a specific project, or pushing your technical skills into unfamiliar areas, our residency programme gives you the freedom to experiment, take risks, and grow as an artist, with mentoring and support.

Throughout your residency, you’ll have access to our specialist spaces, designed to enable experimentation and innovation, including โ€“ Virtual Production Film Studio, 32.4 Spatial Audio Sound Lab, Immersive Digital Theatre โ€“ as well as mentoring from experienced practitioners and researchers within SOUND/IMAGE, giving you a sounding board for ideas, honest critical feedback, and guidance rooted in applied practice research.

We are committed to inclusion and have a strong track record of helping artists secure funding to support their residency, such as through the Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) funding from Arts Council England โ€” grants designed specifically to give individual practitioners the time and resources to focus on their development and take their work to the next stage. If you’re considering applying, we can offer guidance and support through that process.

Collaborations

One of the key aims of Sound/Image research centre is to disseminate music and research in new and exciting venues outside of the typical university spaces.

Our Loudspeaker Orchestra Series, featuring 20-channel portable immersive speaker system, and IKO ikosahedral speaker, allow for bespoke multichannel concert setups in collaboration with historical venues, arts spaces, and any other curious spaces there may be!

Not just a technical exercise, we aim to weave the history and ethos of each space through the concert series via collaborative curation of events that explore the possibilities that open when musicians and performers dialogue artistically with a spaces’ acoustics, and it’s culture.

Interested in collaborating?

Collaborations with Sound/Image are bespoke to specifications and based on mutual interests between partner and department. We encourage collaboration with all types of spaces, especially those that challenge and expand our horizons.
