PE & Sport Science team supporting Team GB Olympian

Olympic medals won by

Staff in our PE and Sport Science portfolio are supporting a Team GB Olympian. Sprinter Sam Reardon and his coach initially presented for follow up to a hamstring injury Sam had sustained. Sam had been working towards recovery but was concerned that smaller issues were evidence of continuing or further problems. Mark Chapman, Senior Lecturer in Sport Science and Coaching, and Dr Marcos Seijo, Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, along with students on the BSc Sport & Exercise Science programme, used a combination of physical assessments and ultrasound imaging to determine that Sam was experiencing minor reactions as his body was going through the usual healing process.

This reassurance allowed Sam to continue and start to improve on his performance prior to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sam’s qualifying times saw him drafted into the Team GB squad as a last-minute replacement for an injured athlete. After our support for his recovery, the Olympian went on to win two medals at Paris and is now working with the Sport and Exercise Science team to keep on top form during the off season. Our ongoing support for this locally based athlete and his coach is just one of our many relationships with local athletes and teams that are benefitting from our services at Sparrow’s Farm.
