Calisthenics event with PE & Sport Science students

A recent event hosted by Dr Marcos Seijo showcased principles of calisthenics, a form of strength training that uses body weight as resistance, to students on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science and BA Physical Education and Sport degree programmes.

Alexis Komianos from Calisseum Ltd was invited to give a session on the value of calisthenics for physical development, health promotion, and innovation within the sport industry. In terms of physical development, Alexis highlighted how fitness can be improved using bodyweight exercises, and that calisthenics develops strength, mobility, coordination, and discipline while requiring minimal equipment. This approach provides a more inclusive means of participating in physical activity, with benefits for longer-term engagement in sport and the fostering of confidence and resilience in participants.

The collaboration between Calisseum Ltd and the University of Greenwich also shows how sport initiatives can combine community engagement, education, and innovation to create sustainable fitness programmes. Students had an opportunity to discuss ideas such as developing a progressive calisthenics app that is accessible to people with different ability levels, as well as opportunities to integrate calisthenics into primary and secondary Physical Education curricula.

At the end of the session, Alexis gave a practical demonstration of introductory calisthenics movements, such as balance holds, assisted squats, and wall push-ups. These exercises are examples of how accessible and adaptable calisthenics can be for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

Marcos is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology, and programme leader for theĀ BSc in Sport and Exercise Science programme.
