100 Women: The artist redrawing ‘sexist’ comic book covers

An artist in India is challenging sexist drawings of women in comic books by parodying them using male heroes in poses typically associated with women.

She-Hulk has superhuman strength and speed and is one of the most formidable hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel world.

Like Hulk, not only does she have physical power, she’s also completely green.

Yet, on a 1991 comic book cover, she is shown in a seductive pose, wearing a G-string bikini, with her curves sharply accentuated.

Indian artist Shreya Arora was shocked when she saw the image.

“For Hulk, the visual representation focuses on his strength. For She-Hulk, all we see is an emphasis on sexuality,” says Arora, who grew up reading comic books.  More

Postpartum psychosis: Adele spotted her friend’s illness

Singer Adele and Laura Dockrill

Adele’s best friend says the singer was the first one to spot her postpartum psychosis.

Laura Dockrill gave birth to a baby boy, who is Adele’s godson, in February this year.

“She recognised it in me, I was on the phone FaceTiming her and she was the first one to detect what I might have,” Laura told Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The serious mental illness affects one in one thousand mums and can lead to hallucinations after giving birth.

Laura said: “The last six months can only be described as hell, it’s been the worst time of my life.”

She says her symptoms were “insomnia, delusions, suspiciousness and paranoia”, and has written a blog post to share her experience with mums who might be going through the same thing.

Adele shared Laura’s story and described it as “intimate and heartbreaking”.  More

Jamie Chadwick becomes first woman to win British Formula 3 race

Jamie Chadwick became the first woman to win a British Formula 3 race by claiming victory at Brands Hatch.

Chadwick moved from fourth on the grid to second by the end of the first lap and stayed behind Singapore’s Pavan Ravishankar for the rest of the race.

When Ravishankar incurred a 10-second penalty for a jump start, Chadwick secured a historic win.

“Today shows it’s possible [to win] and nothing to do with my gender,” said the Bath-born 20-year-old.

Chadwick said she knew Ravishankar would be punished but hoped it would be a drive-through penalty as she “wanted to win on the road”.

“When I’m on the money I know I can be the quickest or one of the quickest,” she said.  More

Ethel Williams

A campaigning suffragette who became Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s first female GP has been honoured with a plaque.

Ethel Williams set up her practice in 1904 after championing better health care for women and children.

Despite graduating from the London School of Medicine, she had to gain her internship abroad as women at that time could not train in British hospitals.

A plaque commemorating her achievements has been erected by the local council on the house where she lived.  More
