Periods and football: Meet the fans campaigning for free sanitary products at stadiums

Periods and football are two things rarely, if ever, mentioned in the same sentence.

Still a taboo subject, many people will still ask – in 2018 – what periods have got to do with the sport.

But with more than a quarter of Premier League fans women, it has never been more relevant than it is now.

So, with that in mind, meet Orlaith Duffy, Erin Slaven and Mikaela McKinley – three Celtic fans behind the ‘On The Ball’ campaign to get free sanitary products in football grounds around the UK.  More

100 Women: The artist redrawing ‘sexist’ comic book covers

An artist in India is challenging sexist drawings of women in comic books by parodying them using male heroes in poses typically associated with women.

She-Hulk has superhuman strength and speed and is one of the most formidable hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel world.

Like Hulk, not only does she have physical power, she’s also completely green.

Yet, on a 1991 comic book cover, she is shown in a seductive pose, wearing a G-string bikini, with her curves sharply accentuated.

Indian artist Shreya Arora was shocked when she saw the image.

“For Hulk, the visual representation focuses on his strength. For She-Hulk, all we see is an emphasis on sexuality,” says Arora, who grew up reading comic books.  More

Kate Cross: England bowler ‘didn’t know her purpose’ during anxiety struggles

“I didn’t do anything for three days. I just slept and cried.”

Just over two years ago, England women’s bowler Kate Cross looked to have the world at her feet.

She had broken record after record on her way to playing international cricket, becoming the first girl to be accepted into the Lancashire Academy at the age of 15 before becoming the first woman to play in the Central Lancashire League for Heywood in 2015.

The year before, she had become one of the first 18 women to be awarded professional contracts by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

But unbeknown to all who knew her, Cross was struggling with anxiety and depression.  More

Postpartum psychosis: Adele spotted her friend’s illness

Singer Adele and Laura Dockrill

Adele’s best friend says the singer was the first one to spot her postpartum psychosis.

Laura Dockrill gave birth to a baby boy, who is Adele’s godson, in February this year.

“She recognised it in me, I was on the phone FaceTiming her and she was the first one to detect what I might have,” Laura told Radio 1 Newsbeat.

The serious mental illness affects one in one thousand mums and can lead to hallucinations after giving birth.

Laura said: “The last six months can only be described as hell, it’s been the worst time of my life.”

She says her symptoms were “insomnia, delusions, suspiciousness and paranoia”, and has written a blog post to share her experience with mums who might be going through the same thing.

Adele shared Laura’s story and described it as “intimate and heartbreaking”.  More

England work placements for BAME coaches

England manager Gareth Southgate with some of his coaching team at the 2018 World Cup

Black and minority ethnic coaches (BAME) will be offered work placements with senior England teams to help increase diversity in football.

It is one of the measures outlined by the Football Association in a new equality action plan.

The FA said in January it was working on plans to increase equality in the organisation and the wider sport.

“We want the FA to reflect modern society in this country,” FA chairman Greg Clarke said.

“It will not happen overnight, but this is a significant step in the right direction to make football more equal, more diverse and more inclusive for all.”

The three-year action plan, called In Pursuit of Progress, puts forward a range of measures and targets it wants to hit by 2021.  More

Jamie Chadwick becomes first woman to win British Formula 3 race

Jamie Chadwick became the first woman to win a British Formula 3 race by claiming victory at Brands Hatch.

Chadwick moved from fourth on the grid to second by the end of the first lap and stayed behind Singapore’s Pavan Ravishankar for the rest of the race.

When Ravishankar incurred a 10-second penalty for a jump start, Chadwick secured a historic win.

“Today shows it’s possible [to win] and nothing to do with my gender,” said the Bath-born 20-year-old.

Chadwick said she knew Ravishankar would be punished but hoped it would be a drive-through penalty as she “wanted to win on the road”.

“When I’m on the money I know I can be the quickest or one of the quickest,” she said.  More

Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month – August 2018

On 12 August it is International Youth Day and with that in mind we have  chosen Jonjo Heuerman as our Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month.

Jonjo was inspired to start fundraising following the death of his Nan in 2009 from Bowel Cancer, the same illness that took the life of Bobby Moore his football hero.

He decided that he wanted to make a difference and raise money in their memory so he spends his spare time raising funds and awareness for The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.

His first challenge was a walk from Wembley Stadium to Upton Park finishing at the Champions Statue.  This has now become an annual event which he uses as a special memorial service to those lost to the illness.

Jonjo has arranged and taken part in many fundraising events since his first including:

  • Crossing 3 counties in Ireland on Foot
  • A giant football tag of the 93 league clubs
  • Dribbling a football for 50 miles
  • Cycling and walking via all the Premier League clubs
  • 450 mile walking and cycling challenge on 50th anniversary of England winning the World Cup
  • A walk of the Papal Basilcas of Rome

So far Jonjo has raised over £300,000 in funds and £1 million in awareness through his events and challenges and will not stop until there is a cure.

Jonjo became the youngest recipient of an award in the New Year’s Honours list when he received the BEM for his fundraising work in 2016.
