The funeral of a Jamaican “pioneer” who co-founded what later became the Notting Hill Carnival has been held at Southwark Cathedral.
War veteran Sam King MBE settled in south London having arrived on the Empire Windrush in 1948 and became Southwark’s first black mayor.
His son, the Reverend Michael King, said his father was a “pioneer” who had been “a servant of the people”. More
Our Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month in July 2014, Laura Mothersole, took part in the Pride march in London with Girl Guiding. All those who took part had an amazing day and really enjoyed themselves.
The UK’s first named memorial statue for a black woman, Mary Seacole, is to be unveiled in London later.
She was a Jamaican-born nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War in the 19th Century.
The statue’s completion follows a 12-year campaign, which raised £500,000 to honour Mrs Seacole. More
Women will join jousting competitions at English castles for the first time this summer, English Heritage has confirmed.
Female knights will battle against male counterparts at Bolsover, Kenilworth, Pendennis and Carisbrooke castles. More

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are spearheading the Heads Together campaign to end stigma around mental health. Heads Together aims to change the national conversation on mental health and wellbeing, and will be a partnership with inspiring charities with decades of experience in tackling stigma, raising awareness, and providing vital help for people with mental health challenges. Perhaps the biggest story of the football year is in east Asia, where Eastern won the Hong Kong Premier League title in April. The wait since the last championship had been 21 years but the headlines were all about the 27 year-old head coach Chan Yuen-ting.
Just days after lifting the trophy, she was presented with another prize. This time it came from the Guinness Book of World Records, for being the first woman to win a top-flight title in men’s professional football. More
