The Shuffle of Things – The Large and The Small of It

Peter Wilson is a founding partner of BOLLES+WILSON. He has lectured and taught internationally, and was a unit master at the Architectural Association from 1975-1988. He is a regular jury member of architectural competitions and was president of the jury for a new Arts Centre in Maribor (Slovenia). In 2012 he was a member of the jury for the new Medellín Velodrome, Columbia.

The oeuvre of BOLLES+WILSON spans from pre-digital atmospheric drawings to a particular positioning in relation to mass in the age of media. They insist on the materiality, spatiality and atmosphere of architecture as a phenomenological experience.

Ben Johnson

A painter’s 40-year obsession with architecture

Ben Johnson was born in Wales in 1946 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. He has recently exhibited at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Spain; the Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague; the National Gallery, London and the Alan Cristea Gallery, London.

He is currently exhibiting at the Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao and in Abu Dhabi, and in November will be exhibiting at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

He was made an honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects for his contribution to the public’s understanding of contemporary architecture. He has just won the Threadneedle Prize Visitors’ Choice Award.

He lives and works in London.

Smout Allen – Augmented Landscapes and Delicate Machinery

Smout Allen (Mark Smout and Laura Allen) are architectural designers, researchers and Senior Lecturers based at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Their work looks at architecture’s interaction with the landscapes around us – natural and artificial, urban and geologic, aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric – which are interpreted, filtered, or otherwise augmented by instruments, devices, and machines. Their teaching and architecture studio promotes design as an architectural laboratory that merges imaginative speculation and making with design and research practice. Smout Allen have exhibited at the AA, the RIBA, the Royal Academy, the Venice Biennale and have lectured internationally.

In the lecture they will discuss their recent work where architectural representation and the iterative process of design: investigation, proposition, drawing, making, modeling, etc, are particularly significant and lead to highly visual and engaging pieces which establish an important relationship between the user, the viewer and the artist/architect.

William Palin
Inexhaustible Fancy and Solid Judgement -the life and works of Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661-1736)

Description:

Nicholas Hawksmoor remains one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of British architecture. His works, which include St Alfege church and parts Greenwich Hospital (now the Old Royal Naval College) display both a monumental grandeur and a brilliant inventiveness. Hawksmoor composed his buildings using his deep knowledge of world architecture, both modern and antique, often finding inspiration in descriptions and reconstructions of the celebrated long-vanished buildings of the ancient world.

This lecture examine Hawksmoor’s life and works with special focus on his London commissions, including Greenwich Hospital his famous ‘East End’ churches.

Biog:

William Palin is Director of Conservation at the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich. He was previously Director of SAVE Britain’s Heritage and (from 2000-2007) Assistant Curator at Sir John Soane’s Museum. He publishes and lectures on a range of subjects within the field of 18th- and 19th-century architectural history and art. He is a former columnist for Country Life Magazine.

Saarinen Visiting Professor of Architecture, Yale

Andy Bow joined Foster + Partners in 1996 and is now a Senior Partner.

He studied architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow. As a student he won numerous awards including the Glasgow School of Art Newberry Medal and the City of Glasgow Silver Medal for Architecture.

After graduating in 1988 he moved to London to work with Jeremy Dixon and Ed Jones.

He then moved to Terry Farrell’s office, where as a design director he worked on schemes in the Middle East, the Far East, the UK and Europe.

Recent projects at Foster + Partners have included The Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan; the Ilham Baru Tower, Kuala Lumpur and the Musée de la Romanité Narbonne. He has also worked on many of the practice’s projects in London, including: the Millennium Bridge, City Hall, the masterplan for Trafalgar Square; and Albion Riverside.

He is currently working on a variety of projects in London, including the Battersea Power Station Masterplan where he is working alongside Frank Gehry.

He is an ARB registered Architect and is a Fellow of the RIAS.

In 2000, he was a judge of the RIBA Bronze and Silver student medals and for ten years was an RIBA External Examiner at the Bartlett. He has lectured and been a visiting critic in over 30 schools of architecture around the world, most recently at the Bartlett, AA and the RCA.

He is currently an Eero Saarinen visiting Professor at Yale University and in June 2014 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glasgow.

Nick Ervinck 

Computational Sculptures: Between Futurism and History > Lecture + ‘GNI_RI_2014’ Book Launch

Fostering a cross-pollination between the digital and the physical, Nick Ervinck (b.1981, Belgium) explores the boundaries between various media. Studio Nick Ervinck applies tools and techniques from New Media, in order to explore the aesthetic potential of sculpture, 3D prints, animation, installation, architecture and design. Nick Ervinck’s work has been included in numerous group shows, nationally as well as internationally. His work has been exhibited at MOCA Shanghai, MARTa  Herford, SMAK Ghent Zebrastraat Ghent, Brakke Grond Amsterdam, MAMA Rotterdam, Hermitage Amsterdam, Creative World Biennale Rio De Janeiro and Oklahoma, Ron Mandos Amsterdam and Highlight San Francisco. In his artwork Nick Ervinck always balances the narrow border between traditional sculpture and working with 3D. He has one foot firlmy planted in the digital world. This means that he does not only use the computer as an instrument, but that the digital logic largely determines his artistic thought and method as well. At the same time, he always tries to respect the (art) historical heritage and history and archaeology are two of his main sources of inspiration.
