Neil Spiller will talk about his 30 years of work, Drawing Drawings and pushing the architectural envelope.

Neil Spiller is Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and Construction and Professor of Architecture and Digital Theory at the University of Greenwich, London.

He guest edited his first Architectural Design (AD), Architects in Cyberspace in 1995 followed in 1996 by Integrating Architecture, Architects in Cyberspace II (1998), Young Blood (2000), Reflexive Architecture (2002), and Protocell Architecture with Rachel Armstrong (2010).  Neil’s books include Cyberreader: Critical Writings of the Digital Era, Digital Dreams and Visionary Architecture – Blueprints of the Modern Imagination. He is on the AD editorial Board. His architectural design work has been published and exhibited on many occasions worldwide.

Will Alsop is a prominent architect who established ALL Design in 2011 and currently works on smaller scale artworks and buildings as well as large-scale urban planning and design initiatives. His practice is an international operation guided by the principle that architecture is both vehicle and symbol of social change and renewal.

His philosophy extends from the design of individual buildings to embrace broader principles of urbanism and city development. By abandoning the hegemony of an acceptable style, he has rendered the whole process of architecture one of increasing fluidity and transparency; a new and refreshing position for architecture both in the UK
and elsewhere.

Will has specialised in large-scale masterplans and regeneration projects for boroughs and districts in Almere, Rotterdam, Groningen, Berlin, Manchester, Middlesbrough, and Barnsley, for which he won the 2003 Architects’ Journal Award for Architecture. Yet, it is iconic and irreverent designs such as the Glenwood Power Plant in Yonkers, New York and the Sharp Centre for Design for the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto that have established him as a visionary in the field of architecture.

Queen’s Paper House – Final Report

Congratulations and commiserations to the team who attempted to put together the world’s largest paper house, to celebrate the London Festival of Architecture.  Unfortunately the structure did not survive being fully inflated for very long.

The event and preparation were reported on by ITV London

Luke Olsen, Diploma Coordinator of Architecture Technology and Paper House event organiser says:

“Making innovative architecture means taking risks. Queens Paper House MK2 aspired to be the worlds largest paper building and it so nearly made it. The building inflated close to full size before a sudden cut in power to the fans followed by a strong gust of wind caused the building to turn in on itself and effectively become a sail – sheering the walls from the floor along the designed in tear line.  This was both spectacular and informative at the same time. We will endeavour to rectify this design fault…

A hearty congratulations to the students, teachers and consultants who’s tireless dedication and heroic effort made this happen.”

The Department of Architecture and Landscape is delighted to have been invited to be one of the key London Festival of Architecture 2013 partners. The site of the proposed pavilion is at the *Old Royal Naval College (ORNC), Greenwich. The project is being presented in partnership with the ORNC.

Working in collaboration with an internationally acclaimed design team including engineers Arup, Max Fordham and Quantity Surveyor PT Projects the proposal entitled Queen’s Paper House consists of a temporary inflatable paper structure. Launched to coincide with the Department of Architecture’s End of Year Summer show Queen’s Paper House is augmented with an array of events. The pavilion references Inigo Jones’ celebrated Queen’s House, part of Royal Museums Greenwich, in the sightlines of whose vista the Queen’s Paper House will be located.

PAPER CITY WORKSHOP

Paper city is a hands on event, where visitors are invited to participate in the delirious pursuit of construction. Join in a two day architecture interactive workshop run by staff from the University of Greenwich School of Architecture, Design and Construction to develop your spatial and architectural skills. The workshop will focus on temporary and festival architecture. You will develop drawing and model making skills contributing
to a temporary Paper City within Greenwich Maritime site.

DESIGN PORTFOLIO WORKSHOP

The Sustainable Landscapes Research Group are pleased to announce the forthcoming talk by Tom Turner on Buddhist Gardens and a talk by Simon Drury Brown on the Druk White Lotus School  in Ladakh, in India.

Tom is a world authority on landscape and garden history and he will review gardens and landscapes designed under the influence of Buddhism, as the world faith which has had most influence on garden and landscape design. Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha, who founded the faith, was born in a garden, became enlightened in a garden, gave his first sermon in a garden, spent each monsoon in a garden and died in a garden. His followers built monasteries in gardens and, at a later date, made gardens which symbolise the nature of the cosmos

In 2012 Simon Drury-Brown graduated from the University of Greenwich and then spent three months in Ladakh working on the Druk White Lotus School (DWLS – see Wikipedia article).  Simon will talk about the work, to create a beautiful, sustainable and productive landscape in an extreme environment at the school. The children will learn amid fruit, flowers, greenery and native plants. The school buildings were designed by Arup Associates and have won many awards. The project is funded by the Drukpa Trust, a charity which counts  the Dalai Lama, Joanna Lumley and Richard Gere among its patrons.
