Open Lecture: Gareth Williams – Designers and Britain in the Twenty-first Century

Drawing on his recent book ‘21 Twenty-one: 21 Designers for Twenty-first Century Britain’ (V&A Publishing, 2012), Gareth Williams will consider the role and experiences of designers in Britain today, with particular reference to their activity as cultural diplomats promoting an image of modern, creative and individual Britain. Williams is Senior Tutor of Design Products at the Royal College of Art, London, and many of the designers in his book are alumni or tutors of this MA programme.

Gareth Williams is a curator and writer about contemporary design, and Senior Tutor of Design Products at the Royal College of Art. He is author of several books about contemporary design culture including ‘The Furniture Machine, furniture since 1990’ (V&A, 2006) and ’21 Twenty-one, 21 Designers for Twenty-first Century Britain (V&A, 2012). His exhibitions include ‘Milan in a Van’, (VA 2002) and ‘Telling Tales, fantasy and fear in contemporary design’ (V&A, 2009).
