The Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge is a major new international centre for plant science research and winner of the 2012 RIBA Stirling Prize. The lecture will explore the building, rethinking the typology of laboratory architecture around the scientists’ specific requirements, as well as the working process with the client and design team from brief development, early concepts, design and technical innovations to final construction.

Gavin Henderson is one of five directors at Stanton Williams, joining the practice in 1994. He has worked on a number of high profile projects, most recently leading the delivery of the Sainsbury Laboratory plant science research centre. With a particular interest in the role of public space, much of Gavin’s work has involved interventions in complex historic contexts and schemes involving a close engagement between architecture and the public realm.
