Atelier 4 :: Pure Fabrication :: Francois Girardin / Raoul Kunz / Carl Turner

Academic Year 2010 – 2011

Atelier 4 continues its journey into the physical and digital possibilities of an architectural education. Structured around a series of exercises, the atelier encourage students to question the relationship between physical and digital design tools. By dissolving the boundary between the object and its representation the atelier sought to produce sensorial, productive and responsive space, and to empower students with the technical and analytical skills required to think about and reflect on these conditions.

The year start with composition, pattern and tectonics exercises, leading into a small project dealing with dry fabrication and cardboard construction. Students will vote on the proposals, and elect a project to realize at full scale at the end of the year. (sponsored by Eltete France and Dentressange UK).

The final building project is to design parts of new university campus. This had no physical site, but instead was developed as a response to a series of constraints and requirements: Typical and Atypical, Privacy and Exposure, Advertisement and Introversion, Image and Appearance, Sensors and Effects,  Abstraction and Situation, Constraint and Creativity, Scale and Occupation, Fabrication and Projection, and Skin and Screen.

Ultimately, this new university require students to define an approach to subjective identity in a contemporary culture of fast construction, turnover, and relentless technological exposure.
