Exciting PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Decarbonising the Energy Sector in the Global South

The energy sector is responsible for more than three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions, making its decarbonisation a top priority in combating climate change. Despite growing recognition of the public sector’s potential to drive just and equitable energy transitions, much research still focuses predominantly on private sector roles, especially overlooking contexts in the Global South.

We are offering a fully funded PhD scholarship on “Decarbonisation Through Public Ownership: Transforming the Energy Sector in the Global South.” This project addresses critical research gaps by investigating how public ownership can deliver effective, equitable, and sustainable energy decarbonisation.

Utilising an innovative, interdisciplinary approach, you will engage with comparative case studies, expert interviews, focus groups, and pioneering critical realist econometric modelling. The research will explore:

  • Institutional, historical, and socio-economic conditions enabling effective public ownership in energy decarbonisation.
  • Comparative analysis of decarbonisation potential under public versus private ownership.
  • Development of policy frameworks and tools for just and sustainable energy transitions tailored to the Global South, with insights applicable globally.

Key Details:

  • Application deadline: midnight UTC on 23rd March 2025
  • Interviews (online via Microsoft Teams): planned between 31st March and 11th April 2025
  • PhD start date: By end of July 2025

Join this transformative research project to help shape equitable, effective, and sustainable global energy transitions.
