Exciting PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Decarbonising Public Transport in the Global South

Transport is one of the world’s largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, and its decarbonisation is critical for achieving global climate targets. Yet, despite growing evidence that public ownership can significantly enhance sustainability and equity in transport services, its potential remains underexplored, especially in the context of the Global South.

We’re offering a fully funded PhD scholarship on “Decarbonisation Through Public Ownership: Transforming Public Transport in the Global South.” This research will investigate how publicly owned transport systems can accelerate sustainable and equitable decarbonisation, addressing critical issues of climate justice and social equality.

This interdisciplinary project will use comparative case studies, expert interviews, and innovative econometric modelling grounded in critical realism. You’ll explore key questions around the role of public ownership in decarbonisation, the intersection of climate targets and social equity, and draw insights from global experiences to support transformative policy interventions.

Key Details:

  • Application deadline: midnight UTC on 23rd March 2025
  • Interviews (online via Microsoft Teams): planned between 31st March and 11th April 2025
  • PhD start date: By end of July 2025

Join us in shaping impactful solutions to global climate and social justice challenges through pioneering research.
