{"id":2408,"date":"2026-03-14T13:12:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T13:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/sound-image\/?page_id=2408"},"modified":"2026-03-16T11:07:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T11:07:40","slug":"call-for-works-sonic-spheres","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/sound-image\/festivals\/sonic-spheres\/call-for-works-sonic-spheres\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Works &#8211; Sonic Spheres\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SOUND\/IMAGE Research Centre invites composers, sound artists, researchers, and industry practitioners to propose talks, workshops, performances, and installations for Sonic Spheres, taking place in the Fireworks Factory at Woolwich Works on Saturday 9 May 2026.\u00a0<br>Sonic Spheres is a one-day combined conference and evening concert dedicated to exploring, performing, and critically reflecting on creative approaches to spatial audio\u00a0&#8211; particularly through composing and performing with the IKO loudspeaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This 2026 edition foregrounds hands-on practice, experimentation, and reflection, focusing on composing, performing, analysing, and building for both singular and multiple IKO loudspeakers. The IKO is both instrument and system: an immersive environment for spatial composition, diffusion, and live performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We actively encourage submissions from artists, researchers, and practitioners of all backgrounds, especially those historically underrepresented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Special consideration will be given to students, apprentices, and emerging practitioners.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Submission Categories<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>1. Talks &amp; Workshops<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We welcome proposals including, but not limited to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compositional strategies for spherical loudspeakers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Case studies of works created for IKO or comparable systems&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovative spatial audio software, hardware, or hybrid systems&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IKO loudspeaker as instrument&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of new performance practices for immersive audio&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embodied and perceptual experiences of immersive sound&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Spatial) sound and environment&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DIY and experimental approaches to spatialisation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New instruments, controllers, or systems for spatial audio creation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical reflections on the aesthetics, philosophy, or politics of immersive sound&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications of spatial audio in VR\/AR\/XR, gaming, installation, and audiovisual contexts&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Submission Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Title&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abstract (max. 500 words) including 3\u20135 keywords&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Author biography&nbsp;(max. 300 words)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presentation Format&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;15-minute presentation + 5-minute Q&amp;A&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-person attendance&nbsp;required&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suitable for early-stage research through to fully developed projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screen and stereo playback provided&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workshops and practical demonstrations should clearly outline format, duration, and technical requirements.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Performances &amp; Installations<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We welcome artistic proposals engaging directly with one to three IKO loudspeakers&nbsp;with loudspeaker orchestra.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Acousmatic \/ Fixed Media&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to 15 minutes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ambisonic&nbsp;\/ IKO works must include a stereo reduction for review&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Live Performance&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to 20 minutes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must clearly articulate how the IKO loudspeaker will be used&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genres may include live electronics, live coding, mixed music, experimental performance&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Installations&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flexible duration&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must specify spatial configuration and technical requirements&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Submission Requirements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proposals are not anonymised&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Programme notes (max. 500 words)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Author\/performer biography&nbsp;(max. 300 words)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical and logistical requirements&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-expiring access links (Drive, Dropbox, etc.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please ensure all links\u00a0remain\u00a0accessible.
