A new event on working with attachment informed complex trauma was held earlier this year, organised by Noel Hargrave, Senior Teaching Fellow in Counselling, and colleagues, and hosted by the Institute for Lifecourse Development.
The session was an introduction to working with attachment informed complex trauma but also touched on some more advanced concepts such as attachment dynamics and relevant psychometrics, as well as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a technique designed to help process and recover from trauma.
The course complemented the core curriculum on the MSc Therapeutic Counselling programme, offering practical tools and deeper insights essential for working with the complexities of trauma that graduates will encounter in their practice.
The event featured a demonstration of EMDR by Mark Brayne, a highly respected psychotherapist with expertise in trauma work. Mark completed a master’s degree in transpersonal counselling and psychotherapy, having previously had a distinguished career as a foreign correspondent and senior editor for Reuters and the BBC, where he had firsthand experience of traumatic events and their impact.Students from the MSc Therapeutic Counselling programme were in attendance, along with students on the BSc Psychology with Counselling programme. The event was very well received by the students – “… thank you for organising such a brilliant session… please pass on our thanks to Mark, he was really inspirational…”.
