Recycle Right

Check what you can recycle and what you can’t:

We’ve listed the common items you can recycle alphabetically in the table below.

If your item does not appear on the list check the information below the table for what to do with it.

Remember to reuse anything you can before you throw it away.

Remember to try and put items in the right bins every time to avoid contaminating our recycling stream that can cost the university money and impact our recycling rates.

Some waste doesn’t go in either bin – see below for what to do and if it isn’t covered here please get in touch with the Sustainability Team or your local campus FM office.

  • Batteries (all types)- see table below
  • Clothes / Shoes/ Textiles no facilities currently exist at our campuses apart from Avery Hill, Southwood site that has a British Heart Foundation collection bank near the Gatehouse.  The university also runs the end of term student halls reuse programme in June   where all items are donated to the British Heart Foundation. Please remember you can donate items to local charity shops.
  • Electrical waste (or WEEE as it’s known!):  contact your local FM helpdesk for collection e.g.
    • Computers/ Printers/Computer parts and accessories
    • Electronic or electrical equipment
    • Telephones
    • Cables/ wires
    • Mobile phones
  • Glass – separate recycling bins can be found in the campus locations in tables below.
  • Hazardous waste – contact your local FM helpdesk for collection e.g.
    • Lightbulbs- all kinds
    • Aerosols
    • Paint
    • Chemicals
  • Non MFD Printer / Toner cartridges- send back to your supplier using the freepost returns service. (MFD toner cartridges should be put in the residual/general waste).
  • Videocassettes – contact your local FM helpdesk for collection

Batteries Boxes for used batteries are situated in the Facilities Management Office, SOE in Hawke.We also have additional battery boxes in Hawke – workshop, Grenville – SOS school office, Nelson room 108, Anson SOP school Office, Blake – Student Services and Pembroke in the FM office
Clothes / shoes / textiles No official collection point. Donate at charity shops or store until end of term student halls reuse project.
