{"id":538,"date":"2013-06-26T14:24:34","date_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/?p=538"},"modified":"2013-06-26T14:24:34","modified_gmt":"2013-06-26T14:24:34","slug":"first-class-reward-for-travellers-cambridge-odyssey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/2013\/06\/26\/first-class-reward-for-travellers-cambridge-odyssey\/","title":{"rendered":"First-Class Reward for Traveller\u2019s Cambridge Odyssey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first traveller to win a place at the University of Cambridge will graduate on Saturday with a first-class honours degree in history.<\/p>\n<p>Zoah Hedges-Stocks, 23, was born into a family of travelling showmen and spent every summer school term working on her mother\u2019s food van, selling candy floss to fairgoers across East Anglia. She won a place at Murray Edwards College in 2009 and overcame a spell of illness that interrupted her studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still can\u2019t quite believe I have got a first. It has been a lot of hours and a lot of essays,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve never experienced any snobbery about my background and everyone has been really welcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mother, Bernice, and her grandparents will be at the graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so proud of Zoah and just couldn\u2019t take it in when she said she had a First,\u201d her mother said. \u201cNo one else in our community has ever been to university and I think she has done amazingly well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hedges-Stocks has been offered a place on a journalism training course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2013\/06\/Zoah-Hedges-Stocks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-539\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2013\/06\/Zoah-Hedges-Stocks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2013\/06\/Zoah-Hedges-Stocks.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2013\/06\/Zoah-Hedges-Stocks-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first traveller to win a place at the University of Cambridge will graduate on Saturday with a first-class honours degree in history.
