{"id":3177,"date":"2019-11-01T09:53:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T09:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/?p=3177"},"modified":"2019-11-01T09:53:42","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T09:53:42","slug":"inspirational-diversity-champion-of-the-month-november-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/2019\/11\/01\/inspirational-diversity-champion-of-the-month-november-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month &#8211; November 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/11\/henry-slade.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/11\/henry-slade.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/11\/henry-slade-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>World\nDiabetes Day is 14 November, with that in mind we have chosen Henry Slade as\nour Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry is a\nprofessional rugby player who signed his first professional contract with Exeter\nChiefs at the age of 18, the same year in which he also developed type 1\ndiabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has\nadapted to life with diabetes but admitted there was a moment he thought his\ncareer may have come to a premature end.&nbsp;\nHe could not understand how he could continue to play and have diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately\nhe was told his rugby career would not be jeopardised, providing he was able to\ncontrol his diabetes.&nbsp; He quickly educated\nhimself on what management routines worked for training and matches, what\nworked best for himself and took advice from fellow rugby professional Chris\nPennell who is also diabetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry has\nnot let his diabetes hinder any of his ambitions.&nbsp; He was called into the\nEngland squad in 2014 and is currently part of the England Squad at the World\nCup in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked\nif diabetes has changed him, he answered: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s changed my life.\nThe way I look at it is you can\u2019t change what\u2019s happened to you.
