{"id":3154,"date":"2021-03-17T11:04:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T11:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/?p=3154"},"modified":"2021-03-17T11:04:03","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T11:04:03","slug":"inspirational-diversity-champion-of-the-month-october-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/2021\/03\/17\/inspirational-diversity-champion-of-the-month-october-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month &#8211; October 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/10\/Elizabeth.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/10\/Elizabeth.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.gre.ac.uk\/diversity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2019\/10\/Elizabeth-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>October is Black History Month and with that in mind we\nhave chosen Elizabeth Anionwu as our Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth was inspired to become a nurse at the young age\nof four because, whilst a \u2018wonderful nursing nun\u2019 treated her childhood eczema\nin an expert and sensitive manner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth has put in a substantial amount of her life into\nher work as a nurse, health visitor and tutor working with black and minority\nethnic communities in London and in 1979 helped to establish the first\nnurse-led UK Sickle &amp; Thalassaemia Screening and Counselling Centre. She has\nchaired several projects for the NHS Sickle and Thalassaemia Screening\nProgramme and in 2004 she was presented with the Royal College of Nursing\nFellowship (FRCN) for her work in the development of nurse-led sickle cell and\nthalassaemia counselling services and education and leadership in transcultural\nnursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1988 she was awarded a PhD from the Institute of\nEducation, University College London and from 1990-1997 she worked at the\nInstitute of Child Health, UCL as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Community\nGenetic Counselling. She has written extensively and is a co-author of the book\n\u2018The Politics of Sickle Cell &amp; Thalassaemia\u2019 published in 2001.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1997 Elizabeth was appointed as Dean of the School of\nAdult Nursing and Professor of Nursing at the University of West London and in\n1999 she established and was Head of the Mary Seacole Centre for Nursing Practice\nuntil her retirement in 2007. &nbsp;The university then honoured her with the\naward of Emeritus Professor of Nursing. In 2001 she was awarded a CBE for\nservices to nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth was vice-chairperson&nbsp;of the Mary Seacole\nMemorial Statue Appeal from its launch in November 2003. The statue was\nunveiled in the grounds of St Thomas\u2019 Hospital in June 2016 and Elizabeth is\nnow a Life Patron of the new charity, the Mary Seacole Trust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was honoured with a Damehood in the 2017 for her\nservices to nursing and the Mary Seacole Statue Appeal. The Queen\u2019s Nursing\nInstitute awarded her a Fellowship (FQNI) in October 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;In July\n2018, as part of the celebrations for the 70th Anniversary of the National\nHealth Service, Elizabeth was included in the list of the&nbsp;70 most\ninfluential nurses and midwives in the history of the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is a Patron of the Sickle Cell Society, the Nigerian\nNurses Charitable Association (UK) and the Sickle &amp; Thalassaemia\nAssociation of Nurses, Midwives &amp; Associated Professionals (STANMAP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out more about Elizabeth see here <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elizabethanionwu.co.uk\/about-me\/\">http:\/\/www.elizabethanionwu.co.uk\/about-me\/<\/a>\n\nTo\nfind out more about Black History Month see here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October is Black History Month and with that in mind we have chosen Elizabeth Anionwu as our Inspirational Diversity Champion of the Month.
