The course will set out how thinking sonically differs from thinking visually. Using a body of literature it will move from the basic principle that sound can be understood as a significant phenomenon in human history, to the critical application of sound based thinking to contemporary issues.
Beginning with Jonathan Sterne’s The Audible Past it will move through a series of weekly readings and culminate with Chaos Media: A Sonic Economy of Digital Space to critically evaluate sound in the present digital time period.
